The Time of Trouble, the Resurrection, and the Sealed Prophecy
Have you ever reached a part of the Bible that feels both familiar and mysterious at the same time? Daniel 12 is one of those chapters. It closes the final vision given to Daniel, and it holds some of the most powerful promises in Scripture. When we study Daniel 12, we step into a scene filled with distress, deliverance, angels, resurrection, and the hope of a final reward. This chapter also brings questions. What is the time of trouble? How does God protect His people? Why are some words sealed for a future time? What do the numbers 1260, 1290, and 1335 mean? These questions matter. They help us read Daniel with both humility and expectation.

The Great Tribulation and Deliverance
1 At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone whose name shall be found written in the book. 2 And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. 3 And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever. (Daniel 12:1-3)
The Time of Trouble
Daniel 12 opens with words that catch our attention. Daniel writes, “There shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time.” This is a strong statement. It describes a season of distress unlike anything people had ever seen. When Scripture uses language like this, it shows us that God is preparing His people for something intense. The Bible often tells the truth about suffering. God never pretends that His people will avoid hardship. Instead, He speaks plainly and then promises His help.
This time of trouble shows us that God allows seasons of shaking. Yet He never abandons His people in those moments. When we read these words, we should remember that God understands every challenge we face. Hard times do not surprise Him. God works through them to refine our faith and remind us of His power. The time of trouble highlights the reality of spiritual conflict. It also prepares us for the hope that follows.
Michael’s Role in Protection
Daniel continues, “At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people.” Michael appears in Scripture as a leader in spiritual warfare. His presence signals a decisive moment. When Michael stands, it means God is acting to protect His people. This is important. God uses both heavenly and earthly means to guard His people. Even when they experience trouble, His protection never stops.
We learn something vital here. God does not promise a life without conflict, but He promises that we will never face conflict alone. Michael stands as a sign of God’s faithful care. He represents the unseen help that surrounds God’s people during seasons of distress. This reminder strengthens our confidence. God always provides the protection we need.
Salvation for God’s People
The next line brings comfort. Daniel says, “Your people shall be delivered, everyone whose name shall be found written in the book.” God knows His people by name. He writes them in His book. This picture appears in other parts of Scripture. In Exodus, Moses speaks of God’s book. In Revelation, John mentions the Lamb’s book of life. The message is clear. God keeps a record of His people, and He promises to save them.
This deliverance is not earned. It is an act of God’s grace. God rescues His people because they belong to Him. This should fill us with hope. When life feels confusing, God holds our names. When pressure increases, God remembers His promises. The book reminds us that God never overlooks the faithful. He sees their devotion, and He brings them safely through distress.
Resurrection and Judgment
Daniel then describes one of the clearest Old Testament pictures of resurrection. He writes,
“And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.”
This statement teaches two important truths. First, death is not the final word for God’s people. God promises resurrection. Second, resurrection includes judgment. Some rise to everlasting life. Others rise to everlasting contempt. Daniel 12 shows us that eternity matters. Our choices in this life have real consequences. God sees every person, and He will bring justice.
The promise of resurrection encourages us. God restores His people. He gives them life that death cannot touch. When we face grief, Daniel 12 reminds us that God has prepared a future beyond the grave. The resurrection hope strengthens our faith and helps us endure.
The Wise Who Shine
Daniel closes this section with a beautiful picture. He says,
“And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above, and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.”
Wisdom in Scripture is not just knowledge. It is understanding that leads to faithful living. Wise people know God, trust His word, and lead others toward righteousness. God honors this kind of life. He promises that the wise will shine. Their lives reflect God’s glory.
When we read this, we should ask God to make us wise. We want to live in a way that helps others walk with Him. We want our lives to shine with the light of His truth. Daniel 12 shows us that a life of faithfulness has eternal value. God sees the wise, and He promises a reward that lasts forever.
The Sealed Book and Time Prophecies
4 But you, Daniel, shut up the words and seal the book, until the time of the end. Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.” 5 Then I, Daniel, looked, and behold, two others stood, one on this bank of the stream and one on that bank of the stream. 6 And someone said to the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the stream, “How long shall it be till the end of these wonders?” 7 And I heard the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the stream; he raised his right hand and his left hand toward heaven and swore by him who lives forever that it would be for a time, times, and half a time, and that when the shattering of the power of the holy people comes to an end all these things would be finished. 8 I heard, but I did not understand. Then I said, “O my lord, what shall be the outcome of these things?” 9 He said, “Go your way, Daniel, for the words are shut up and sealed until the time of the end. 10 Many shall purify themselves and make themselves white and be refined, but the wicked shall act wickedly. And none of the wicked shall understand, but those who are wise shall understand. 11 And from the time that the regular burnt offering is taken away and the abomination that makes desolate is set up, there shall be 1,290 days. 12 Blessed is he who waits and arrives at the 1,335 days. 13 But go your way till the end. And you shall rest and shall stand in your allotted place at the end of the days.” (Daniel 12:4-13)
Sealing the Words
Daniel 12:4 says,
“But you, Daniel, shut up the words and seal the book, until the time of the end.”
This instruction shows that some parts of Daniel’s vision were not fully understood in his lifetime. God sealed them for a future time when understanding would increase. This teaches us humility. Some parts of prophecy unfold gradually. God reveals His truth at the right time. We do not need to force answers where God has chosen to wait.
The verse continues, “Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.” This describes activity and searching. People will seek to understand God’s word as history unfolds. When we study Daniel today, we stand on centuries of learning. God has guided His people through the ages, and He continues to give insight in His perfect timing.
The Angelic Dialogue
Daniel then sees two heavenly beings. One asks an important question.
“How long shall it be till the end of these wonders?”
The question invites us into the tension of the passage. People want to know when trouble will end. God gives an answer that is both simple and mysterious. The angel says,
“It would be for a time, times, and half a time.”
This phrase appears in Daniel 7 and Revelation. It often points to a limited period of oppression. The message is clear. God sets boundaries on trouble. Hard seasons do not last forever. God holds the timeline.
Later, Daniel hears that these events relate to the shattering of the power of the holy people. Yet even in this difficult statement, hope remains. When God allows distress, He also limits it. He uses it to refine His people and advance His purposes.
The Timeframes Explained
A Time, Times, and Half a Time
This phrase often represents three and a half units of time. Many understand it as 1260 days or a symbolic period of tribulation. The language communicates both intensity and limitation. God allows distress, but He also sets its end.
When we read this, we remember that God controls history. He knows every season. He knows when trouble begins and when it ends. This assurance helps us trust Him even when life feels uncertain.
The 1290 Days
In Daniel 12:11, we read,
“From the time that the regular burnt offering is taken away and the abomination that makes desolation is set up, there shall be 1,290 days.”
This period begins with a major disruption in worship. It echoes events described earlier in Daniel. The number suggests an extension of the previous period. The message focuses on endurance. God’s people often face seasons when faithfulness feels costly. The 1290 days remind us that God sees every moment of endurance.
The 1335 Days
Daniel 12:12 says,
“Blessed is he who waits and arrives at the 1,335 days.”
This final number extends the previous time frame again. Those who reach it are called blessed. This blessing highlights the value of perseverance. God honors those who hold firm through the full season of trouble. Waiting is often one of the hardest parts of faith, yet waiting is also where God does deep work in our hearts.
These time frames teach us something important. God understands our desire for clarity, yet He calls us to trust Him even when we do not have full understanding. These numbers remind us that God watches over every day of our journey.
Daniel’s Final Instructions
The chapter ends with gentle and hopeful words.
“But go your way till the end. And you shall rest and shall stand in your allotted place at the end of the days.”
God tells Daniel to continue his faithful life. Daniel does not need to see everything happen. He only needs to trust God’s promise. God assures him that he will rest and rise to receive his inheritance. This blessing belongs to all who serve God with steady hearts. God knows their work. He holds their future.
These closing words remind us that faithfulness in our daily lives matters deeply. God sees every moment of obedience. He prepares a place for His people. Daniel’s journey shows us what it means to trust God for today and for the future.
Closing Thoughts on Daniel 12
Daniel 12 gives us a picture of trouble, protection, resurrection, and hope. It teaches us that God is present in seasons of distress. It reminds us that He knows His people by name. It shows us that resurrection is real, judgment is certain, and the wise will shine forever. The sealed words and time frames teach us to trust God’s timing. We may not understand every detail, but we know the One who holds history.
As we study Daniel 12, we learn that God cares for His people in every generation. He walks with us through trouble. He strengthens our faith.
